  1. A great bang for the buck! Review by Nabil

I had been using the flagship audio-technica ATH-AD2000X previously for a while, and greatly enjoyed their midrange and vocal reproduction which was superb on Japanese rock/pop music as well as their great classical music suitability. However, I always found them somewhat lacking in the quantity (not quality!) of the low-end of the spectrum, especially if compared to solid IEMs like the Dunu dn-2000s which I recently picked up. Compared to the great mids and highs, the lows were relatively anemic.

I looked into potential 'upgrades' in terms of the bass and warmness. My primary target was the Audeze LCD-2s, which I had previously tried and frankly had considered my 'dream' pair of headphones (even compared to the LCD-3s etc.). However, I was surprised to find when I tried them again that I couldn't quite fall in love with them as I had earlier. Although the bass was there and absolutely great, the rest of the spectrum was nothing awe-inspiring and felt like a side-grade at best. I tried a few other 'top of the line' headphones as well and was frankly not blown away by any of them. The last pair that I tried on recommendation of the shop assistant was the ath-r70x. Immediately I was impressed by how present the low-end was. It just sounded much more 'full' all across the spectrum, especially the low-end, with strongly present bass and great extension into the lowest frequencies. It was also much less fatiguing than the other pairs I tried, sonically as well as physically (due to its very light weight). I left that day excited by this new discovery.

The next day I returned to audition the r70x in more depth, and also brought along my well-used pair of ad2000xs for comparison. To cut a long story short, I reaffirmed my love for the sound signature of the r70x and bought it on the spot. Many reviews on the r70x can be found online and in more detail so I will not bother to write about it here but suffice it to say I enjoy their balanced, non-fatiguing sound very much and will likely be keeping them as my main pair of headphones for the foreseeable future. The best part of it is, they cost half the price of my previous pair! (Posted on 8/9/2016)
